As a driver, whether you are an independent trucker with your own company or you are a for-hire trucker, you need appropriate truckers’ insurance. When you are on the road day in, day out in your truck, you are risking your health and your entire livelihood. Recognizing that insurance is a necessity is only the beginning of your journey toward having the correct coverage for your business.

All truckers must have commercial auto liability insurance. This is a federal requirement. The primary liability insurance provides protection if you are in an accident and someone else is injured. Your truck requires commercial auto insurance even if you lease it.

Several companies offer insurance to people in the trucking industry. Today, we will specifically look at Truck Writers Insurance.

Who is Truck Writers Insurance?

Truck Writers Insurance is a family-owned insurance agency specializing in insurance for members of the trucking industry. The company began in 1983 and has grown to be one of the largest truck insurance agencies in the US. The company has a stated goal of partnering with its clients to learn as much about the trucking industry as they know about insurance.

As an agency, Truck Writers works with several insurance companies and help you choose and compare different quotes to get the cheapest one for your trucking business.

How does Truck Writers Insurance work?

Unlike many insurance companies, Truck Writers Insurance doesn’t operate with a one-size-fits-all mentality. The agents associated with Truck Writers analyze your operation and then provide advice regarding which coverages you need. The agent partners with you to help you assess your risks to make your business as safe as possible.

Their main goal is to learn and understand as much as possible about your trucking business and recommend you the best coverages at the best prices.

The coverages they offer

Depending on the size of your company, you have various options for trucking insurance. Whether you are running on your own or running a fleet of trucks, Truck Writers has a variety of policies to offer you. The insurance advisers will help to create a program that includes the appropriate coverages for your business.

Captive and self-insurance programs

Transportation Alternative Risk Plan (TARP) is a group captive program that is specifically for the trucking industry. This program allows companies to manage losses better and control their long-term costs. The captive program offers auto liability, physical damage, trailer interchange, cargo liability, general liability, bailee liability, and employee benefit liability coverages. You can learn more about these coverages in our more in-depth articles:

MSG, or Midwest Safety Group, is a workers’ compensation self-insurance program in Minnesota. Risk sharing, effective claims handling, and using best safety practices allow members to get a return on their premiums yearly.

Fleet insurance

Generally, insurance companies consider trucking businesses with more than 10 units as a fleet. For fleet insurance, the underwriters look at drivers, loss runs, commodities hauled, IFTAs, financials, and safety implementation. Many times, insurers will require a safety review before creating a quote.

The following coverages may be included in a fleet policy:

There could be other coverages offered depending upon your assessed needs.

Owner operator programs

Whether you have a fleet, or one single truck, Truck Writers has tailor-made insurance services for you. Owner operators require coverages beyond the basics. Coverages included in your owner operator policy may consist of:

Whether you are just getting started as an owner operator or you’ve been doing it for quite some time, Truck Writers can help you find the appropriate coverages for your needs.

Praises, ratings, and reviews for Truck Writers Insurance

Truck Writers isn’t accredited by the Better Business Bureau. However, the company has an A+ rating with the BBB. There have been no complaints lodged with the BBB, nor have there been any reviews posted on their website for the company.

We attempted to find financial stability ratings through AM Best as well as a few other ratings companies, but we were unable to do so. This doesn’t necessarily mean the company isn’t stable. It simply means they haven’t been rated, possibly because they are a family-owned business rather than a large conglomerate.

We were able to locate some financial data on the Dun & Bradstreet business directory website. According to their data, Truck Writers has a revenue of approximately $4.63 million.

Three employees rated the company on glassdoor.com. Two of them did so anonymously, and the third left a name. They all gave the company five stars, and there were comments about being part of the family. All three also indicated that they would recommend the company to a friend.

Employee satisfaction doesn’t necessarily indicate the business products are of better quality, but it gives you an indication of how the business relates to people. There were seven reviews on their Facebook reviews page, with the last one being from 2018. Those reviews were mixed, but six of the seven reviewers indicated they would recommend Truck Writers.

Final thoughts

Truckers need specialized insurance for their businesses. They risk their health as well as their livelihoods if they don’t maintain appropriate insurance coverage. Federal law requires that they have at minimum auto liability insurance. Some states require more coverage than that.

It’s essential to find a company that understands the trucking industry when selecting your insurance coverage. Truck Writers Insurance specializes in insurance for truckers. They offer a variety of coverage options to help fill your insurance coverage needs.

Truck Writers is a family-owned company with the goal of knowing the trucking business as well as they know the insurance business. The company started in 1983 and has grown to be one of the largest companies specializing in transportation insurance. They don’t offer a one-size-fits-all solution for your insurance needs. Instead, they analyze your business practices and help you find the best insurance coverage for your company.
